Volpaia and the wild boars

There are two restaurants in Volpaia, the village near the place we're staying at right now in Radda in Chianti, Toscano. Here at La Locanda (the name of the B & B) they only have dinner on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We arrived here on Thursday, so we decided to go to Volpaia for dinner that night. There are two ways to go: take the winding dirt road to the village, which means you have to drive back in the dark and it takes about twenty minutes, or walk down the tractor path to Volpaia, which also takes about twenty minutes. So, since we've been so used to walking all over Italy, we decided to walk. Going there was fine. Coming back was another story. This path goes down into a deep dark wood (think "lions and tigers and bears.....oh my!). In this wood live lovely little deer and.....WILD BOARS. We had been assured that the boars are not aggressive and avoid humans whenever possible. Fine. However, when you're walking on a dirt road in the dark of night with only a flashlight, and you hear a lot of rustling in the brush beside you, and some snorts and grunts, it's pretty frightening. That's what happened on Thursday night. We got back here in record time, because we found out how fast you can go up a hill once that adrenaline kicks in.
So what did we do tonight? We decided to try the other restaurant in Volpaia. This time on the way home, we made a lot more noise, and I only noticed a sound or two I wasn't too sure of. Both restaurants were very good, by the way. Dinner last night here was just as good also. We've definitely been enjoying a lot of good food, and only a couple or three mediocre meals, mostly lunch.
Buon appetito to you all!
